MIS605 – SYSTEMS ANALYSIS AND DESIGN
Subject Code – MIS605
Subject Name – Systems Analysis & Design
University Name – Torrens University, Australia
Data analytics entails examining databases to find trends and insights that are later used to make informed organizational decisions.
Business analytics is concerned with evaluating various forms of data in order to create realistic, data-driven business choices and then putting those conclusions into action. Data analysis is frequently used in business analytics to identify problems and develop solutions.

Systems Analysis and Design

System analysis and design are concerned with the planning of the development of information systems by comprehending and specifying in detail what a system should perform, as well as how the system’s components should be implemented and interact. System analysts analyze information system requirements and build such systems using analysis and design methodologies to solve business challenges. This course covers the principles, skills, approaches, strategies, tools, and perspectives that systems analysts need to be successful.

Process modeling and data modeling can be used to provide a deeper understanding of a system thus they are an integral part of system analysis. Process modeling models processes in a system while data modeling helps in identifying the data that flows through the processes.

Important Terms-

UCD: Use-case diagrams depict a system’s high-level functions and scope. The interactions between the system and its actors are also depicted in these diagrams. In use-case diagrams, the use cases and actors define what the system does and how the actors interact with it, but not how the system works internally.

Data Flow Diagram: A data flow diagram depicts how data moves through a system or process. Data inputs and outputs, data repositories, and the numerous sub-processes through which the data passes are all included. To define multiple entities and their relationships, DFDs are created using standardized symbols and syntax.

Entity Relationship Diagram: An entity-relationship diagram (ERD), also called an entity-relationship model, is a graphical depiction of relationships between people, objects, places, concepts, and events in an information technology (IT) system.

Torrens University, Australia

Torrens University is a world-class university with campuses in Sydney, Adelaide, Melbourne, Brisbane, the Blue Mountains, and China. The institution provides over 300 courses in areas such as design, business, hospitality, technology, and more.
Assessment Details
Learning Outcome-
a) Using data and process modeling tools, identify, critically assess, and offer information systems solutions for inefficiencies incorporate processes, procedures, and work practices.
b) For a medium-scale information system development project, formulate, validate, and record business needs, and effectively convey these requirements to stakeholders.
c) Demonstrate the ability to use Unified Modelling Language (UML) models to effectively analyze, create, and develop information systems.

Requirement Analysis

In response to the case study provided to you by your facilitator, identify the functional and the non-functional requirements for the required information system and then decide on the project and the software development life cycle. Also, identify actors, build a use case diagram, and document a set of use cases.
After reading the case study, answer the following questions.

Question 1 (10 mark).

For the given case study, propose a suitable software development life cycle and project life cycle. Provide diagrams with justification.

Question 2 (10 mark).

Identify all the human and the non-human actors within the system. Provide a brief description of every actor, clearly describing if the actor is primary, secondary, or an abstract actor.

Question 3 (30 marks).

Using the information provided in the case study, build and provide a Use Case Diagram (UCD) using any diagramming software.

Word Count and Layout
The total word count for this assessment should be no more than 2200 words.
Please provide all your answers in an MS word document.
Please note that you are NOT required to copy the questions over to the MS Word
document. Use the question number to indicate which question your answer relates to.
The recommended font size is 12 with 1.5 line spacing.
Design Specifications
Based on your responses to questions in Assessment 1, perform process and data modeling and develop and document a number of design diagrams including context diagrams, level 0, and level 1 data flow diagrams, and entity-relationship diagrams.

CLIENT RATING

Please answer the following questions-

Question 1 (15 mark).
Create and provide a Context Diagram for the given case study.
Question 2 (20 mark).
Create and provide a Level 0 Data Flow Diagram (DFD). The Level 0 DFD should contain all the major high-level processes of the System and should show how these processes are
interrelated/interacting.
Question 3 (20 mark).
For the given case study, provide an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD). Provide the logical model only!
Question 4 (5 mark).
For the given case study, identify the data stores including the files that are not part of ERD.
Question 5 (16 mark).
Translate the ERD you developed in Task 4 into a physical relational database design. Use some database tool such as Microsoft Access to create your database and submit the diagram that you made using this tool. Normalize your database design to the Third Normal Form (3NF).
Word Count and Layout
The word count of this assessment is 2500 words +/- 10% but this assessment focuses largely on diagrams. The text in this assessment would largely be the explanation of the diagrams.
Please provide all your answers in an MS word document
Video Collage
For the given case study provided with assessment 1, apply human interface design skills and design a prototype, either as a web application or a mobile application. Create a short video explaining your prototype to a hypothetical client.
This is a group assignment.

Complete the following tasks-

Part A – The Prototype
Based on the case study as well as the requirement analysis and design specification you completed for Assessment 1 and Assessment 2 respectively, develop a prototype for the System. The prototype must address the following criteria:
conform to human interface design guidelines in Module 5
reflect all major functional requirements in the case and additional requirements in
Assignment 1
be in a digital form, viz. Please note that hand-drawn on a piece of paper is not acceptable
to enable all actors of the System to perform their designated task
be designed as either a web application or as a mobile app.
(60 marks)
Part B – Video
Record a video of all group members presenting the prototype that your group built-in Task 1 to a hypothetical client. The length of the video should be between 13 – and 15 minutes. As a minimum, you’re the group needs to demonstrate:
how does the prototype/IS solution meets the business requirement of the given case
the advantages of the type of application of choice over the other? For example, if the prototype is a mobile app, that demonstrates the advantages of a mobile app over a web application
how each actor in the system will interact with the System, viz. how they would be able to complete their tasks through the System
(40 marks)
Part C – Peer Evaluation
It is required that each individual student complete a confidential peer evaluation of the other team members.
